生死是什么呢？道家认为两者是统一的，因为「有就是无，无就是有」。从没有形体到有形体叫做生，从有形体到没有形体叫做死。人之所以生是因为「气」的积聚，气聚便是生，气散便是死，生死是互相循环的。道家对每个人说：生命不是你的，是天地借给你的冲和之气；本性也不是你的，是天地借给你的自然法则。
应该怎样看待生死呢？庄子说，古时候的真人不喜爱生也不憎恶死，不迷恋生前也不追求死后；仅仅把生死看做物的变化。人只有安于造物者的安排，忘却生死，顺应事物发展的规律，才能进入虚无的境界，做到天人合一。
