世传，一日，释尊外行，遇一鹰之逐一鸽，鸽谓鹰曰：“勿食我，纵我之命，犹有后鸽，而吾命唯一也。”鹰曰：“吾何不知？然饥甚，非食尔不能活也，吾侪居世不易，不至穷途，吾何逐之不舍？”
释尊闻而生慈心，揽鸽于怀。鹰怒谓之曰：尔以慈悲之名救彼，则忍使我饥而亡耶？释尊曰：“吾不忍尔之伤鸽，亦不欲睹尔命亡，我不入地狱，谁入地狱？”乃削身肉，取天平，左置鸽，右置肉。然削肉虽多，难使平。至割尽，终平。方是时也，天地易色，风云变幻，而佛祖生矣。
