有一个虔诚的佛教徒，每天都采集自己种的鲜花到佛院里供佛。一天，正当她送花到佛殿时，碰巧遇到禅师从法堂出来。禅师非常欣喜地说道：“每天都看到你用鲜花供奉佛祖，依经典的记载，常常用鲜花供奉佛祖的人，下世会具备良好的外貌。”
信徒非常欢喜地答道：“这是应该的，我每次来礼佛时，心灵就像被清理了一遍，但回到家中，心就烦乱了。而作为一个妇人，怎样才能在尘嚣中保持一颗清净的心灵呢？”
禅师反问道：“你以鲜花献佛，相信一定对种花有所研究。我现在问你，你如何保持花朵的新鲜呢？”
信徒答道：“保持鲜花的方法是每天为它浇水，并为它修剪枝叶。因为花梗的一端在水里，所以容易腐烂，如果腐烂了就不会吸水了，自然就容易凋谢了！”
禅师说：“这同样是保持一颗清净之心的道理啊，我们生活的环境就像瓶里的水，我们就是花，只有不停地对心灵进行自我净化，才能让气质得到提升，并不断地忏悔、检讨，改进陋习、缺点，这样才能留意到生活中更多的美好。”
