Bursa Malaysia: Retail investors need to be vigilant

In a statement yesterday, Bursa Malaysia said it has observed a growing number of cases where the Bursa Malaysias name and corporate logo were being misused for marketing purposes by unscrupulous companies and websites.

Bursa Malaysia Bhd has urged the public to remain alert and cautious before participating in any investment schemes and activities amid the rise in scams.

The exchange advised the public to invest with licensed parties only.

In a statement yesterday, Bursa Malaysia said it has observed a growing number of cases where the Bursa Malaysias name and corporate logo were being misused for marketing purposes by unscrupulous companies and websites.

Such activities often come in the guise of attractive investment returns or opportunities. These scams are often through unsolicited letters purporting to come from Bursa Malaysia or its subsidiaries, and marketing-related emails and postings on various social media platforms, carrying the Bursa Malaysia name and logo.

“Recipients are often asked to click on links leading to false websites or scam phone numbers, ” it said. “Members of the public are also reminded to invest with licensed parties only, ” it stressed.

In addition, the exchange recommended that one do not: make any payment without being certain a transaction is legitimate; provide any personal information or data to anyone one does not know; reply to suspicious emails or text messages, or contact the sender; and open suspicious website links or attachments which can potentially harm your computer or mobile devices with a virus.
