多头是指投资者对金市看好，预计金价将会看涨，于是趁低价时买进黄金，待黄金上涨至某一价位时再卖出，以获取差额收益。

空头是投资者和黄金商认为现时金价虽然较高，但对金市前景看坏，预计金价将会下跌，于是把黄金卖出，待金价跌至某一价位时再买进，以获取差额收益。空头指的是认为金价已上涨到了最高点，很快便会下跌，或当黄金已开始下跌时，认为还会继续下跌，趁高价时卖出的投资者。采用这种先卖出后买进、从中赚取差价的交易方式称为空头。
金价走势变化是由多头和空头的力量对比所决定的。多头会预测价格上涨，从而做出购买决策。空头因为预测价格将下跌，将会抛售手中的黄金。如同其他的交易一样，当多头和空头在价格上达成一致时，就达成了交易。
