Meta in Talks to Buy Google Chips; NVIDIA Hit, Alphabet Surges
Meta is discussing a multi-billion-dollar deal to buy Google’s AI chips (TPUs) for its data centers starting 2027, per The Information.
Meta may also rent TPUs from Google Cloud as early as next year.
If finalized, this would be Google’s first major move to sell TPUs externally, shifting it from internal-use chips to direct competition with NVIDIA.
Google Cloud executives believe the strategy could capture up to 10% of NVIDIA’s annual revenue.
Market reaction:
NVIDIA −4.1% premarket, set to lose ~$180B in market cap.
Alphabet +4%, on track toward a $4T valuation.
Takeaway:
A Meta–Google chip deal would be the first real threat to NVIDIA’s dominance in AI hardware.
