Don’t confuse margin and leverage. Though their relationship is interdependent, each functions distinctively. Leverage is the ability to control a large amount of money using none or very little of your own money and borrowing the rest. For example, to control a $100,000 position, your broker will set aside $1,000 from your account. Your leverage in ratios is now 100:1 and you have control over $100,000 with only $1,000. Meanwhile, margin is the initial amount of money that you have to deposit into your account in order to start transactions, including leverage uses, with your broker. Margin is usually expressed as a percentage of the full amount of the position. If your broker requires a 2% margin, you have a leverage of 50:1.

#EUR/USD# #currencies: Biggest U.S banks giving recession warnings dampened risk appetite and sent the #dollar back to its strong position after a five month low this week. The dollar index was up to 105.60, beating against #yen to trade at 136.97. #sterling lost ground 0.4% to settle down at $1.2128, followed by a 0.13% decrease in #euro to $1.0460. The #aussie remained buoyed by RBA’s hawkish stance though it was last 0.16% higher at $0.6699. Kiwi edged 0.02% lower to $0.6317. Offshore yuan trade higher at $6.9845, supported by relaxing COVID-19 restrictions.

#XAU/USD# #commodities: #oilprices kicked off in green as #OPEC+ nations reaffirmed their output targets ahead of an #EUban and price caps on Russian crude, coupled with more easing COVID-19 curbs in China added positive signs for demand. Brent crude futures and WTI crude futures rose 0.5% apiece to trade at $85.96 and $80.35 per barrel. #goldprices were steady despite optimism over smaller interest rates stemming from stronger-than-expected jobs data. Spot gold rose 0.1% to $1,800 an ounce while gold futures climbed 0.2% to $1,813.40. Both almost reached their 4-month highs.

#XAU/USD# #oil plummeted to near a one-year low as worries over recession offset positive supply-side signals from a bigger-than-expected crude inventories. Brent oil futures sank 0.3% to $79.51 while WTI crude futures lost 0.1% to $74.16 per barrel. Many are awaiting November’s U.S producer inflation data to see if it would trigger more volatility to the market. #goldprices pinned below $1,800 on the recovery of the dollar while the markets awaited inflation and GDP data from major countries for further clues in the global economy. Spot gold now traded around $1,770.33 while gold futures fell 0.1% to $1,782.35.
