佛经中有这样一个故事：佛祖在菩提树下问一人：“在世俗的眼中，你有钱、有势、有一个疼爱自己的妻子，你为什么还不快乐呢？”此人答曰：“正因为如此，我才不知道该如何取舍。”
佛祖笑笑说：“我给你讲一个故事吧。某日，一游客就要因口渴而死，佛祖怜悯，置一湖于此人面前，但此人滴水未进。佛祖好生奇怪，问之原因。答曰：湖水甚多，而我的肚子又这么小，既然一口气不能将它喝完，那么不如一口都不喝。”讲到这里，佛祖露出笑容，对菩提树下那个苦恼的人说：“你记住，你的一生中可能会遇到很多美好的东西，但只要用心好好把握住其中的一样就足够了。弱水有三千，只取一瓢饮。”
