Another 5km ice run... Key insights: 1.) Thin ice - More challenging and dangerous. Had several hit-miss moments. Don't be too quick to judge the melting away of snow, as a sign that all is over. Stay vigilant until then end. 2.) Optimise strategy - A slow and steady rhythm is critical. Stay low to the ground with flat foot work. Ensure you run on grass which offers better multi-level traction. 3.) Resilience is key - You remember that life is a game of inches. Either challenge, running (on ice) or life, the margin for error is too small. Akin to the famous Al Pachino quote from "Any Given Sunday - "one half second too slow, too fast and you don't quite [make ] it". The inches we need are everywhere around us. They're in every break of the game, every minute, every second. [In this life] we fight for that inch! ...because we know when we add up all those inches, that's gonna make the @@@@@@ difference between winning and losing! Our new year class of young aspiring traders bravely and humbly stepped up to the challenge of this question, followed by a timeline exercise that I set them to review PEAKS & VALLEYS of their own rollercoaster ride of the past year of 2020. Results are still coming in, but a few traders have already impressed me with their proactive willingness to go all in and engage deep reflective insights of achievements, magic moments & challenges/lessons. There are plenty of benefits to looking back over your shoulder - in life or trading; to improve self-awareness, celebrate wins, learn from past mistakes and build more resilience strategies. Many choose NOT to recall 2020, and we can all likely understand why, given the grief and shock of all that happened. But inevitably we must refocus onto the map of our desired future and let go of the blocks from the past. Neuroscience research highlights the majority of our daily thoughts are negatively charged, literally re-wiring pain patterns into our brain. Put simply, we are blindly driving our mind's motor vehicle (car), while looking out of the rearview mirror. Be mindful. #Market&Mind#

In order to rise to the highs in life & trading, we must learn how to overcome our lows, particularly during times of grief. Brief intro session on the "Grief cycle" (based on the Kubler-Ross model), to our class of aspiring traders, on what is becoming a real pain-point for many, during traditional bouts of equity drawdown. However, according to my performance coaching work with live case-study traders, many are impacted by the environmental grief of the ongoing pandemic and lockdown related disruption. One of the hardest challenges is breaking through stage 1 & 2 of the cycle; shock & denial, which often creates a deep cognitive dissonance mental block, or alternate realities. It's critical to work through the stages; frustration-anger, into the cycle bottom of your mood & energy. This is literally the darkest moment, before a new breaking dawn, which can lead to a post-traumatic growth recovery (PTG). But to make it to the other side, we must first be in a state of "acceptance" of our past experiences, to help learn key lessons that can helps us fail forward and reintegrate into a new future.
