UK Cuts Steel Import Quota, Doubles Tariffs

The UK will tighten steel import curbs by sharply lowering its tariff-free quota and raising duties on excess shipments, in a bid to protect its small but strategically important steel sector. The government said on Thursday it will cut the volume of steel that can enter tariff-free by 60%, while imports above that threshold will face a 50% tariff, double the previous 25% rate. The measures will take effect on July 1. The move comes as domestic steelmakers continue to struggle after decades of de-industrialisation, compounded by high energy costs and a global glut of cheap steel. By strengthening trade defenses, authorities aim to stabilize the industry amid mounting competitive pressures. The policy also brings the UK in line with recent tariff hikes in the United States and proposed measures in the European Union, against a backdrop of rising global trade tensions.
