Hang Seng Index opens higher as tech shares lead gains

17th March 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong equities opened firmer on Tuesday, with the Hang Seng Index rising 104 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 25,938 at the start of trading. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index gained 23 points, or 0.26 per cent, to 8,839, while the Hang Seng Tech Index advanced 25 points, or 0.5 per cent, to 5,137.
Technology stocks provided early support to the market. Tencent Holdings climbed 0.8 per cent and Alibaba Group added 0.9 per cent. Meituan edged up 0.1 per cent, while Xiaomi rose 0.5 per cent. JD.com and Kuaishou recorded gains of 0.2 per cent and 0.6 per cent respectively.
Financial shares were also broadly steady. HSBC Holdings increased 0.5 per cent, AIA Group rose 0.6 per cent and Ping An Insurance gained 0.5 per cent. Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing edged 0.1 per cent higher. Bright Smart Securities & Commodities Group surged 64.6 per cent after trading in its shares resumed.
