Hang Seng Index opens higher as Alibaba rallies, gold miners shine on record bullion

23rd January 2026 - (Hong Kong) Hong Kong stocks opened firmly higher, with the Hang Seng Index up 231 points, or 0.86%, at 26,861. The China Enterprises Index added 87 points, or 0.96%, to 9,201, while the Tech Index gained 55 points, or 0.95%, to 5,817.
Tech shares were broadly stronger. Tencent was unchanged, but Alibaba climbed 3.8% amid reports it plans to list its semiconductor unit Pingtouge. Meituan rose 0.3%, Xiaomi advanced 0.7%, JD.com added 2.6% and Kuaishou improved 1.2%.
Financials were steady to firmer. HSBC increased 0.5%, AIA edged up 0.1%, Ping An rose 1.4% and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing gained 0.8%. With international gold prices hitting fresh highs, gold miners outperformed. Zijin Mining rose 1.3%, Zijin Gold International advanced 2.2%, Zhaojin Mining jumped 4.1% and Shandong Gold climbed 3.9%.
