The Australian sharemarket rose on the penultimate trading day of the year, defying a weak session on Wall Street as gains among banks offset a commodities-driven rout in mining stocks.
The S&P/ASX 200 firmed 16.2 points to 8741.9, following two consecutive sessions of losses. Despite concerns over high valuations of technology companies and the prospect of interest rate hikes, the Australian bourse is set for its third consecutive yearly gain.
