The Nikkei Stock Average falls 1.7% to 48669.70, tracking Wall Street's decline overnight. The main theme has been risk-off, Commerzbank Research analysts say in a research report, noting U.S. equities fell on Wednesday.
Artificial-intelligence stocks are under pressure once again, after a cloud infrastructure company's primary investor pulled out of a data-center project, the analysts say.
Among the worst performers on Japan's benchmark index, SoftBank Group slips 6.7%, Lasertec drops 4.7% and Fujikura loses 4.3%. USD/JPY is at 155.48, compared with 155.70 in New York late Wednesday.
