India's equity benchmarks opened flat on Wednesday, as profit-taking continued for the fourth session after they hit record highs.
The Nifty fell 0.07% to 26,014.85 and Sensex shed 0.02% to 85,120.50, as of 9:22 a.m. IST. The rupee slumped to another record low.
Both the Nifty and Sensex lost about 0.7% in last three sessions since scaling record peaks after 14 months last week, boosted by improving earnings, stable growth and supportive fiscal and monetary policies.
Nine of the 16 major sectors logged losses at the open. The broader small-caps and mid-caps were flat.
"Markets are extending their corrective phase, indicating rising short-term weakness and fatigue near record highs," said Amruta Shinde, technical and derivative analyst at Choice Equity Broking.
"Continued profit-booking has kept sentiment under pressure," Shinde said.
