Wall Street stocks inched up early Wednesday as investors await an earnings report from AI chip powerhouse Nvidia and minutes from the US central bank's most recent interest-rate meeting.
Shortly after trading began, the Dow Jones Industrial Average crept up 0.1 percent to 46,129.44, while the broad-based S&P 500 rose 0.2 percent to 6,634.22.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 0.4 percent to 22,532.91.
"Nvidia, for obvious reasons, is the one everybody's focusing on," said Steve Sosnick of Interactive Brokers. The firm last month became the first to reach a $5 trillion valuation.
"As the company is at the nexus of artificial intelligence investment, what they have to say about the pace of adoption and growth has (a) ripple effect" on the market, Sosnick added.
"We're in the midst of a three-year-long bull market that has been driven by enthusiasm for AI," he said.
Investors also digested delayed US trade figures for August -- held back due to a lengthy government shutdown -- while looking ahead to the release of a key employment report on Thursday.
As the Federal Reserve balances the health of the labor market with risks to inflation in mulling its next interest rate moves, jobs numbers on Thursday could influence Fed policy, Sosnick added.
For now, markets will monitor the Fed's meeting minutes to understand what officials were concerned with at its October policy gathering.
Among individual companies, shares in Target pulled back after the US retailer reported a drop in quarterly sales.
Investors will be closely watching Walmart's earnings early Thursday for further clues on how US consumers are faring.
