The Australian sharemarket edged higher buoyed by a rally in mining stocks after the price of gold reset another high.
The S&P/ASX 200 Index rose 0.1 per cent, or by 6.9 points to 8869.7 at the opening bell, led by gains in the materials sector. That's after US equities traded in a narrow, though positive, range with a federal government shutdown looming and the Trump administration looking to use the disruption to sack thousands of employees to drive down costs.
