Japan's Nikkei Stock Average falls 0.2% at 45680.59 as falls in electronics and pharmaceutical stocks offset gains in financial shares.
Lasertec declines 4.3% and Daiichi Sankyo is 3.1% lower, while Chiba Bank rises 2.6% and Japan Post Insurance is 1.4% higher. Broader market index Topix is up 0.2% at 3191.60. A weaker yen is providing some support for the market.
USD/JPY is at 149.90, up from 148.83 as of Thursday's Tokyo stock market close. Investors are closely watching any developments related to the leadership election for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan and their implications for economic policies.
