Canada Housing Starts Drop Sharply in August

Housing starts in Canada declined 16% in August 2025 to 245,791 units from a revised 293,537 in July and well below market expectations of 277,500. In urban areas with populations over 10,000, starts increased 10% year-over-year, totaling 18,408 units. Montréal led with a 32% increase, driven by multi-unit projects, while Vancouver posted a 46% gain. Meanwhile, Toronto recorded a level similar to that of August 2024.
