Annual food inflation in New Zealand held steady at 5% in August 2025, matching July’s pace and marking the highest rate since November 2023. Grocery food prices contributed most to the increase, rising 4.7% annually, driven by higher costs for milk, cheese, and butter. Dairy products remained the main driver of rising food costs, alongside meat, poultry, and fish, which jumped 8.1% due to higher prices for beef steak, beef mince, and lamb leg. Fruit and vegetable prices climbed 8.9%, and non-alcoholic beverages increased 3.9%, while restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food were up 2.4%.
