Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday amid escalating anti-government protests, following deadly clashes that left 19 people dead—the country’s worst violence in decades. In his resignation letter, Oli cited “the extraordinary situation currently prevailing in the country,” while his press secretary said the move was intended “to ease the current situation.” Demonstrators torched Oli’s private residence, the prime minister’s office, and parts of key government buildings including the presidential residence, parliament, and supreme court. In response, authorities shut down Kathmandu airport, and military and police leaders urged citizens “to exercise restraint to prevent further loss of life” and called for “political dialogue.” President Ramchandra Paudel invited “all sides”—including Gen Z protest leaders—to engage in talks aimed at resolving the crisis peacefully.
