Wall Street stocks fell early Tuesday following a US court ruling that added uncertainty to President Donald Trump's tariff policy.
A US court on Friday ruled that many of Trump's tariffs were illegal, but allowed the levies to stay in place until mid-October.
The judicial decision "introduces a new layer of uncertainty around an already uncertain situation," said Briefing.com analyst Patrick O'Hare.
About 15 minutes into trading, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1.2 percent at 45,012.83.
The broad-based S&P 500 fell 1.2 percent to 6,383.93, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index dropped 1.3 percent to 21,188.11.
Tuesday's session is the first of the week following Monday's Labor Day holiday. It also opens trading in September, historically a weak month for equity market performance.
This week's calendar includes readings on manufacturing and services sector activity, as well as the August monthly US jobs report.
