Japan's Nikkei Stock Average is flat at 42510.04 as gains in insurance and energy stocks help offset losses in chip-related shares.
Sompo Holdings rises 5.3% after it agreed to buy Aspen Insurance for about $3.5 billion. Inpex is up 2.1% following gains on crude oil prices overnight.
Advantest falls 1.4% and Lasertec is 0.5% lower after Nvidia's lackluster revenue outlook. USD/JPY is at 147.42, compared with 147.75 as of Wednesday's Tokyo stock market close.
Investors are focusing on any developments in the potential leadership election for Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
