IDXChannel - Pasar modal di Indonesia telah eksis sejak masa kolonial Belanda, jauh sebelum Tanah Air merdeka.

Awalnya, pemerintah Hindia Belanda membentuk bursa efek di Batavia untuk menghimpun modal besar yang dibutuhkan guna membangun perkebunan secara masif.

Salah satu sumber pendanaan berasal dari tabungan masyarakat Eropa dan Belanda berpenghasilan tinggi.

Untuk mewadahi transaksi tersebut, berdirilah Vereniging voor de Effectenhandel, cabang dari Amsterdamse Effectenbeurs atau Asosiasi Perdagangan Efek.

Bursa ini berlokasi di Batavia (Jakarta) dan memperdagangkan saham serta obligasi perusahaan-perusahaan Belanda yang beroperasi di tanah jajahan.
