在全球债务水平高企，美国债务也处在高水平的情况下，美联储经济学家们警告，按照现代货币理论(MMT)，以印钞来解决赤字问题的话，会带来“灾难性的后果”。
在近期的一份报告中，美联储的经济学家们指出，高水平的负债未必不能持续，只要收入快速上升即可。
“如果选择用印钞来试图解决负债问题，那么就是政府通过发行债券来筹资，然后让央行买这些债券，即印钞。但历史告诉我们，这种政策会带来极高水平的通胀，最终造成灾难性的后果。”
目前美国联邦政府债务超23万亿美元，是美国GDP的103.2%。2019年美国政府赤字则为9844亿美元。
美联储此前的几轮QE就一直被批评在用印钞解决问题。
