早年欧洲各国各花各钱，法国用法郎、德国用马克，跨境换汇麻烦又费钱。为了贸易和发展更顺畅，欧洲各国商量统一货币，谈了几十年。
1991年签《马斯特里赫特条约》定好路线，1995年定名“欧元”。1999年1月1日，欧元先以电子货币形式诞生，法郎、马克与欧元锁定固定汇率 。
到2002年1月，欧元纸币硬币正式流通，法郎、马克可正常使用、也能兑换欧元。同年3月，旧货币彻底退出，欧元成为德法等国唯一法定货币。
