1880~1913年间,金本位以其最纯粹的形式占据统治地位,大多数国家的货币都与黄金挂钩,从而建立了在金本位基础上的汇率体系。由于黄金具有其他货币所不具有的优良特性：质地均匀、不易磨损、数量少而价值高等,所以黄金就成了最理想的世界货币。在金本位制度下,各国自己铸造金币,人们在国外购买商品时,只用支付与该商品价值相等的黄金货币就可以了。这时,各国货币之间就存在一个固定汇率,汇率由各国货币中的含金量来决定。
