香港《南华早报》12月29日文章，原题：尽管有人抱怨覆盖不佳、硬性推销，中国仍计划在2021年推动5G加倍发展 中国计划在2021年再建设至少60万个5G基站，加快下一代网络在主要城市的推广。
根据中国工信部的数据，截至10月中旬，全国累计开通69万个5G基站，用户数超1.6亿。5G被认为是物联网、自动驾驶汽车、智慧城市的“结缔组织”，是工业互联网的中坚力量。中国一直寻求成为新网络技术的领导者。
不过，一些中国消费者抱怨移动运营商的网络覆盖参差不齐，存在捆绑销售5G套餐的情况。北京的5G用户凯文·李说，“我从运营商那里得知，5G将提供可靠快速的数据传输速度，这对我来说很重要。今年早些时候，我升级了5G。但到目前为止，我没感觉到网速有何改善。”一些运营商还取消了现有的4G套餐，迫使用户升级，“被5G”成为社交媒体上热议的话题。
虽然目前5G用户数量远远不及中国庞大的12亿4G用户群体，但这一数字超过了中国5G智能手机的出货量。据中国信息通信技术研究院估计，今年前11个月，国内市场5G手机累计出货量为1.44亿部。这意味着许多5G用户实际上仍在使用4G手机。（作者Jane Zhang，刘德译）
