当地时间29日，英国广播公司报道，英格兰医疗服务系统首席执行官西蒙·史蒂文斯表示，随着新冠肺炎确诊病例在“最艰难一年”结束之际再次上升，英国卫生工作者正“重返风暴中心”。
史蒂文斯在给国家医疗服务系统工作人员的新年贺词中表达了对医护工作者的敬意，称他们“出色地”完成了照顾20万名重症新冠肺炎患者的任务。史蒂文斯表示，他希望在春季结束之前，国家医疗服务系统能够为所有弱势人群提供疫苗接种。他强调，这为2021年带来了希望。
据报道，由于新冠病毒感染达到了公共卫生官员所说的“前所未有的水平”，并且新发现的变异新冠病毒传播不断扩散，英格兰地区的医院现在新冠住院治疗患者已经超过了4月份的最高峰。
