Baker Hughes reported that the total number of rotary rigs in the U.S. increased to 601 from 588 as of January 14, and rigs in Canada rose to 191 from 141 from the prior week.
The net long position of WTI crude oil added 8.1% over week to 287,826 contracts as of January 11, according to the Commodities Futures Trading Commission.
Earlier today, official data showed that China's 4Q gross domestic product rose 4.0% on year, above 3.6% expected.
